I have actually done one cotton sweater and was surprised at the speed at which I got it done. It was a designer men's sweater as I figured I'd get the most yardage from a men's size item. I started with cotton. Looked at seams and labels before commiting to any sweaters. Shopped my local Goodwill. There are a few charity thrifts around that offer a one day sale of $5 for a paper bag full of whatever you want. I haven't been to one, but know they do it.
It isn't hard once you figure it out. It took me a couple of nights a couple of hours while watching my tv shows. Great yarn for 2.99 and a few hours of unraveling the sweater.
