I have been contemplating whether I want to grow a micro crop of fibers, plant fibers that is. I have decided to go ahead and do it. I have ordered both cotton seeds and flax seeds. I am in the process of planning out where I will stake my ground for such.
I have searched the net and found very little information on building tools for the flax processing. In short I think I may have to create my own gizmos to make do. The flax basically needs to be beaten once it has been retted (made to loose it's harder outer core, I believe). Then scouched (again, beaten with a sword type of wooden tool) to finish removing the harder outer core.
We'll see. Necessity is the mother of all invention ( I hope I got that right). I will be sure to post my trials and errors as we go. It'll be a while yet. Just getting the planning stage started.
If you have any resources or information for building a flax-brake, and the hackle/hatchel, please let me know.
Sounds like a monumental undertaking. Hats off to your dedication!
ReplyDeletePausing every few minutes in your work to reread a part can drastically slow down the progress of your new shed, and may even lead to unnecessary confusion. Before you ever begin, you should be able to recite from rote memory the exact dimensions of the shed width, length, and height, and be aware of all the materials you will need. Study the plans as if there were going to be a final exam.
